Nos complace presentar esta breve obra de Juan Calvino, que en sus orígenes fuera titulada De vita hominis christiani en latín y De la vie de l'homme chrétien en francés. La presente edición es una traducción completamente nueva y que proviene de la nueva edición castellana de la Institución de la religión cristiana (III, vi-x, Libros Desafío, 2011). De la vida del cristiano nos abre una ventana hacia una espiritualidad que nos mantiene con los ojos bien puestos en Jesús pero con los pies plantados en tierra, espiritualidad que contrasta con aquella que enfatiza la meditación, la mística y el escapismo terrenal. «El Señor nos ha puesto donde tenemos que estar hasta que nos vuelva a llamar», nos dice Calvino. Esta obra ejerció una buena influencia en los últimos 500 años en el mundo anglosajón y, en especial, en los Países Bajos. Sin embargo, en el orbe hispano, su influencia ha sido mínima. Rogamos, pues, que nuestro Dios Todopoderoso pueda usar esta breve obra para refrescar las mentes y animar la vocación cristiana de los creyentes y alcanzar con su gracia a los que aún no creen.
It is with great joy that we introduce this booklet by John Calvin. It was originally titled De vita hominis christiani in Latin, and De la vie de l'homme chrétien in French. In English it is known as The Golden Booklet of the True Christian Life. This edition is not a translation of the English edition but a new translation from the original, which is featured in the new Spanish edition of the Institutes of the Christian Religion (III, vi-x, Libros Desafío, 2011). De la vida del cristiano opens a window for us into a different spirituality, one that not only sets our eyes on Jesus, but plants our feet firmly on the ground. This spirituality sets itself apart from those that emphasize meditation, mysticism, and other-worldly attitudes. Calvin reminds us that we are where God wants us to be. In the last 500 years, this booklet has been influential in both the English-speaking world and in the Netherlands, yet in the Spanish-speaking world its influence has been minimal. We pray, therefore, that our almighty God may use this booklet to refresh the minds and awaken the calling of believers and reach with his grace those who do not yet believe.
